A cutover plan is an operational control, not a task list
A credible SAP cutover plan explains what must happen, in which sequence, who is accountable, how completion is proven and what decision follows. A spreadsheet containing activity names and dates is only the starting point.
The plan should connect technical deployment, business validation, data reconciliation, governance gates and rollback into one executable sequence.
- Named executor, validator and approver where separation is required
- Explicit predecessors rather than descriptive dependencies
- Planned start, finish and duration
- Completion criteria and required evidence
- Rollback trigger, authority and latest decision time
Structure the plan around controlled phases
Use phases that communicate operational intent: preparation, deployment, system validation, integration validation, business validation, sign-off and rollback. End material phases with an explicit milestone or decision gate.
Keep milestones at zero duration. Represent testing or validation periods as activities with real start and finish times, followed by a separate sign-off milestone.
Rehearse the same plan you intend to operate
Promote the approved plan through SIT, UAT and dress rehearsal while preserving ownership and lineage. Reset execution state and timings for each stage, then incorporate evidenced learning before the next approval.
Production should begin from the proven rehearsal plan, not from a newly copied spreadsheet with uncertain changes.
